On October 25, Taylor Swift surprised fans by dropping her “Bejeweled” music video, which puts an interesting spin on the fairy tale classic. Cinderella. As always, fans dissected the video for hidden details, and what they found was, well, a cornucopia of sparkling secret messages.
While on The show tonight on October 25, Swift told host Jimmy Fallon that her “Bejeweled” music video contained a “psychotic amount” of Easter eggs. In fact, the star said she had to create a PDF for all the Easter eggs in her video in order to keep track of them all.
“Bejeweled” is the second music video from Swift’s new album, Midnights. Following the “Anti-Hero” music video, “Bejeweled” stars Swift as Cinderella and features sisters Haim Danielle, Este and Alana as her evil stepsisters, while Laura Dern plays their evil stepmother. Jack Antonoff, Dita Von Teese and Pat McGrath also make impressive cameos.
As for those many Easter eggs, well, they start at the beginning of the music video. Fans first noted that an orchestral version of “Enchanted” kicks off the video. The track is taken from Swift’s third studio album, Speak Nowwhich she dropped out in October 2010. This is just the first of many Speak Now references in the video.
In fact, Dern seemed to do another Speak Now reference by telling Swift, who is cleaning vomit from one of her sister’s floors, to “not speak”.
Dern also told Swift that she had been “exiled,” which is why she couldn’t attend the talent show at the prince’s castle that her stepsisters happily bragged about having entered. A fan thought Dern’s choice of word might have been a nod to Swift’s song “Exile,” which is featured on her eighth studio album. Folklore. Could this mean that “Bejeweled” and “Exile” are related? More on this matter in a moment.
Danielle Haim then calls Swift a “snake”, which is notably an Easter egg towards her Reputation when Swift started using snake images after Kim Kardashian called her a snake amid their 2016 feud.
When the Haim sisters leave Swift to attend the talent show, they sing “Hangover Song”. This is a fun reference to a TikTok the trio posted in March of an invented hangover song.
After the sisters left, Swift smiled for the camera and began planning her escape to the talent show. At one point, she looked left at a portrait on the wall. Did you catch who it was? It was Antonoff, Swift’s longtime collaborator.
A magic watch then appeared out of nowhere. When Swift opened it, the phrase “exile ends” can be read on the watch face emblazoned with the number two at the bottom.
A fan pointed out that the image could represent that in two weeks Swift will be legally allowed to record it Reputation album, which means that she is almost out of “exile”.
It comes three years after Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine Records in 2019, which owns the masters of Swift’s first six albums. According rolling stoneSwift is only legally allowed to record her albums five years after their release.
Since Reputation marked Swift’s final outing with Big Machine Records, meaning that once her fifth birthday rolls around on Nov. 10, she will officially have the right to re-record all of her previous albums under the label.
Alright, there are still some ester eggs to go. When Swift enters an elevator while sneaking out of the house, she can be seen wearing a sparkly black cape. It reminded fans of the cape she wore in her “Willow” music video.
Swift first leaves the elevator to walk through a forest of jewels, dropping her cape and collecting various dazzled accessories along the way before re-entering the elevator and descending to a different floor. She then reappears in a shimmering white lingerie set. This transformation could symbolize the star putting his forest-themed indie era on Folklore and Still behind her and returning to pop music with Midnights.
The most exciting part of the music video came when Swift seemed to tease that she would be releasing a re-recorded version of herself. Speak Now next album. In the elevator, Swift clicked the purple button for the third floor. Considering Speak Now was Swift’s third album and its cover featured the singer in a purple dress, with fans crossing their fingers hoping the record would make a comeback.
A fan also noticed that the button for the 13th floor was also purple. Since Swift’s next album would technically be her 13th if you include her reissues, the color could also indicate that her next release will be Speak Now (Taylor Version).
At the end of the clip, Swift won the talent contest and was crowned Miss Bejeweled. The honorific could be a callback to his “Junior Jewels” t-shirt from his “You Belong With Me” music video. The track was featured on Swift’s second album, Without fearwhich fell in March 2009.
Swift hid another reference to Speak Now in the video. The final scene featured an instrumental version of Swift track from the album “Long Live”.
As if that weren’t enough, Swift released her “Bejeweled” music video on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of Speak Now. The album was released on October 25, 2010.
