Sean O’Malley is the No. 1 bantamweight in the UFC.
That’s according to the ‘official’ UFC rankings update, which has ‘Sugar’ tossing former champion Petr Yan from the top spot after earning a controversial split decision win at the event. UFC 280 pay-per-view (PPV) this past weekend in Abu Dhabi.
Remember, it’s not his (expletive) fault.
The drama doesn’t end there, as new lightweight champion Islam Makhachev fought his way onto the pound-for-pound chart – at the expense of former champion Charles Oliveira – by dropping and submitting “Do Bronx” in the UFC 280 headliner.
Respect “the truth”.
Here’s how the UFC compiles its official rankings:
The rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of members of the media. Members of the media were asked to vote for who they think are the best fighters in the UFC by weight class and pound for pound. A fighter can only be elected if he is in active status with the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The Champion and Interim Champion are considered to be in the top spots of their respective divisions and are therefore not eligible for weight class voting. However, champions can be elected for pound-for-pound rankings.
