Cue the music of John Carpenter! In Thursday’s Halloween edition of what’s shaping up to be a spooky season of Grey’s Anatomythe trainees were thrown into a kind of “slasher movie” – in other words, challenged to slice and dice real corpses. Did any of them, ahem, make the cut? And did “Haunted” deliver as big of a surprise with this week’s ending as it did last week? (Don’t remember what happened? Our recap will tell you.) Read on and find out.
“I HATE THIS ALREADY” | At the start of the episode, Richard rode in a cart full of pumpkins on which the trainees had to practice their carving skills. Hilariously, this was Mika’s worst fear – she had a pumpkin phobia. She was even afraid of pumpkin bread. Luckily, Nick quickly tagged enough real bodies for them at Ginsu instead. During Link’s cancer contest, he invited Jo to dinner and rubbed her feet. Alas, she had to work. So he was going to find a date with a sexy nurse on Tinder instead. The first patients of the night were two teenagers who had taken LSD and jumped off a roof into a swimming pool. Good, towards a swimming pool, anyway – only one of the flying idiots touched the water. Still high as a kite after making a splash, the boy snuck out of the ER and jumped out of an ambulance straight onto poor Jo as she attended to a patient in labor. So much for Link’s sexy nurse. When the children’s fathers showed up, they took care of a shouting match over which the youngster had given the other drugs. They were so loud that Bailey had to step in — parenting is hard enough, she told them. They couldn’t turn against each other.
During Owen’s trauma training session with the corpses, Winston upped the ante by offering a chance to rub shoulders with him internally who demonstrated the most impressive technique. As the residents fumbled around, Winston told Owen that Maggie made a habit of commenting on just about everything he did — from his stuff to how he heats the water. To boost Winston’s morale, Owen suggested that they terrorize the trainees a bit. After the death of the “patient”, Jules, whose parents donated their bodies to science, was horrified to learn that Owen had stabbed all the corpses for the purposes of beginner training. But how else would they learn? During the second round, Winston remarked that observing the trainees was like “watching children stick their fingers into electrical outlets”. (Interesting revelation: Blue didn’t have a father. OK.) This time the residents saved the “patient.” Who won the chance to rub? Well, they had all contributed, Lucas noted. Could they all rub? Sure. Before leaving, Owen encouraged Winston not to let resentment get the better of his marriage. His solution? Consider quitting cardio to save their relationship.
“I’M MUCH SCARIER WITHOUT THE SHEET” | At Meredith’s house, Amelia encouraged her sister-in-law and Nick to go enjoy a romantic evening. She was babysitting while Zola was at a sleepover. Instead of taking his girlfriend to his house, Nick offered them a fancy hotel room. Where they seemed to spend most of their time drinking champagne and talking about Zola. Regarding the child’s situation, Nick shared how his mother bought a motorhome to show him the whole world in which no one knew he was the child whose father left him. So… road trip for Mer and Zola? Anyway, just then the poor kid called in tears, and Mer and Nick went to get her. She had been trying to fall asleep, and all she could think about was her mother and her aunt and Alzheimer’s disease. It would get better, mom promised. Even if they had to find him a school outside of Seattle. Oh, is this how will Ellen Pompeo leave after a few more episodes?
“WHO DOES ALL THE WORK, STACY?” ME!’ | After campaigning to be chief resident, Levi caved under the pressure of work and barked at a nurse in front of Richard. Naturally, Webber took him aside. “Can you just say the thing I need to hear?” asked an impatient Schmitt. “Take a break,” Richard replied. Levi couldn’t, however – if he “took a break” and someone else died, he couldn’t come back from that. Later, Richard went to the bar to ask Helm to come back to work. No dice. She would quit her bartending job with $800 that same night. In the final minutes of the episode, Richard told Levi that he had failed his class. Webber was going to have everyone in attendance take over when they lost the last class of trainees.
‘TONIGHT WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME SCARE TO LET MY CHILDREN GROW UP’ | In surgery with Maggie, Simone’s phone rang and rang. (Uh-oh, I thought. Grandma?) Nevertheless, the kid who missed the pool made it. After the incident in the operating room, Maggie asked Simone what was going on – Pierce knew Griffith was the intern to watch. So what happened? Simone had been a model resident at the gig she was asked to leave after finally expressing concerns about racial issues. That’s why her phone had gone dark: a video of her losing her ish — and naturally, after the abuse she had suffered — had gone viral, and she had tried to have it taken down. Later, Simone shared with her peers that she was the resident in the video. Finally, as the hour drew to a close, Teddy and Link sympathized on how one stupid impulse could ruin your life at any stage of the game. “I’m a little crazy about Jo,” he said. he let go. It hadn’t been an option… so it was… now what? “I ruined everything,” he said. “Just keep sleeping with other women until those feelings pass,” she advised. Don’t let what happened to her and Owen happen to him and Jo. Outside of this convo, Teddy found Owen asleep in the living room and reminded him of how he had managed to give him multiple vacations in one while they were deployed. It was a sweet moment…during which he dozed off.
