Release date
Ads can be random giving release dates or even windows, and unfortunately, Silent Hill 2 The remake reveal was deafening in giving us no form of timeline for when we can return to this city. This usually means the developers aren’t quite sure yet when they plan to finish production, so we’re guessing there’s at least a year to wait for this game, if not longer.
Platforms
Silent Hill 2 remake has been revealed as a true current-gen exclusive, as well as a console exclusive for the PlayStation 5. PC players will also be able to experience the game at launch, whenever that happens, but Xbox players will have to wait for the release. exclusivity agreement to be executed, which could be as short as six months or as long as a year.
Trailers
The trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake is technically called a teaser because there’s no actual in-game footage, but it still gives us a nice, long look at the spooky town of Silent Hill.
It opens in the same seedy bathroom as the original game, but this time James looks much more distraught. He looks at himself in the mirror and wonders if Mary could really be there waiting for him, knowing that she already died of “that damn disease three years ago”.
James exits, passes the familiar city map near a restaurant, and walks down a street as Mary’s voice enters with the iconic phrase, “In my restless dreams I see this city.” Silent Hill.”
We cut to the disturbing scene where James first sees Pyramid Head in the apartments, as well as Laura outside the hospital. Even some endgame scenes, like with the slipknot, are shown.
What appears to be a new cutscene of James attacking a nurse only plays for a moment but may indicate more additional scenes like this.
Before the title drops, we see James and Maria meeting and Pyramid Head walking in the rain.
Much more has been revealed thanks to a PlayStation Blog post with Konami Producer Motoi Okamoto and Bloober Team’s Creative Director and Lead Designer. It was mentioned in the trailer but reiterated that Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka, the creature’s original designer and composer, will join the Bloober team respectively to develop this remake. Many credit much of the original game’s success as an enduring horror masterpiece to the original Silent team, so having two of those members involved may put some fans at ease.
The main objective of Bloober Team with the Silent Hill 2 remake is to “preserve the atmosphere that made Silent Hill 2 so exceptional while modernizing many aspects of the game’s overall gameplay.”
While they don’t explicitly mention how they will or won’t change the story, that’s probably the part fans are most interested in. While some shots look new, we’ll have to wait to see if any substantial changes are coming in that department.
Gameplay
The trailer didn’t show any gameplay, but again the blog sheds light on how they intended to modernize Silent Hill 2.
the original Silent Hill 2 used a semi-fixed camera that tracked and panned as you moved dynamically through environments. You had some control, but it was mostly meant to frame things in a specific way.
With the Silent Hill 2 remake, the team decided to adopt a more traditional third-person, over-the-shoulder style, similar to Resident Evil 2 remake shifted from the fixed cameras of the original. This change aims to make the game more immersive and visceral, which leads to a new combat system.
The original had a clunky (perhaps intentionally) melee combat system and basic gunplay. We don’t know how mechanically different it will be, only that the team says they intend to use the new perspective and combat system to rebuild set pieces and ways to keep the submerged player.
The team also points out that the Silent Hill 2 remake will run on Unreal Engine 5, and they specifically highlight the Lumen and Nanite features. Lumen is their dynamic lighting system that makes light interact with environments in realistic ways to allow for more natural lighting. Nanite, on the other hand, is what was used to create very detailed environments and levels.
Being a PS5 console exclusive, there will also be features that take advantage of that specific hardware. 3D audio was highlighted as a way to bring players deeper into the titular city, as well as utilizing the controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
Multiplayer
No. True to the original, Silent Hill 2 remake will be a solitary, lonely and ominous experience that can only be tackled solo.
