The New England Patriots had won back-to-back games with rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe heading into Monday night’s game against the Bears. Head coach Bill Belichick kept his quarterback pick a mystery all week as starter Mac Jones appeared to be ready after a sprained ankle. Jones got the start but struggled to make a 3 of 6 start with an interception. Zappe came in and led the Patriots on two touchdowns to cut the lead to 20-14 at halftime. Zappe struggled in the second half and the Patriot defense couldn’t stop the Bears offense all night. They allowed 24 first downs and 243 rushing yards in the 33-14 loss. Chicago outscored New England 13-0 in the second half and the Patriots had four turnovers to the Bears’ one.
“It’s obviously a poor performance tonight. We were poorly coached, overwhelmed. We just didn’t do anything good enough in the game to have a chance of winning or deserve to win. The Bears did some good job. Totally controlled the game in all three phases. Well, obviously we have a lot of work to do here and we have to do a lot better than that. We have to compete better than that and do better than that. It’s not one thing. all of us, and we all need to perform better. It’s as simple as that. This is where we are. It’s not about one player or one coach, one thing. Just collectively we need to perform better, so that’s what we’re going to work on doing this week.” Belichick said in his postgame statement.
“New England has always been a team that relishes your mistakes.”

The Patriots’ early season problems resurfaced against the Bears as they struggled with their red zone defense, penalties and turnovers. During the season, New England has the offense ranked 16th. They have the 12th-best rushing offense in the league, 21st-best passing offense and have been terrible in the red zone, ranking just 26th in the league. The turnover bug has resurfaced and New England is now 21st in turnover differential. They have the 14th best scoring defense, are 25th against the run and 12th against the pass. The Pats’ red zone defense is ranked only 16th in the NFL.
Key injuries: C David Andrews (concussion), WR Nelson Agholor (hamstring), S Kyle Duggar (ankle) and DL Christian Barmore (knee).
Jets fly high
The New York Jets are no longer the laughing stock of the AFC East and have a great chance of toppling a team that has given them fits for the past 20 years, the New England Patriots. New York won a landslide 16-9 win over the Denver Broncos in Denver on Sunday, but the win came at a cost. Rookie running back Breece Hall had his stellar rookie season cut short when he tore his ACL late in the first half. Hall had already run for a 62-yard touchdown to give the Jets the first lead. In a surprising move, the Jets bolstered their backfield by trading RB James Robinson from the Jaguars during the week. The move shows the Jets and their brass are ready to compete in the AFC playoff race this year.
“First of all, this defense is ridiculous,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said. “They have a very good defense. Congratulations to them. Obviously Zach (Wilson) wants things he could get back, but he did a great job. He didn’t return the ball. He got the ball back. the ball where he needed it and we still managed to generate some clean shots in the second half.”

The Jets aren’t necessarily clearing things up statistically this season, but they’re finding ways to win. New York is 14th in the NFL in offense this season. They have the 17th-best rushing offense, which could take a hit with Hall as Robinson gets to grips with the system. The Jets have the 23rd-best passing offense in the league. In the red zone, however, the Jets have been excellent as they rank 9th in efficiency. Revenue has dropped significantly for the Jets this season, with the team ranking 11th in revenue differential. With defensive mind Saleh at the helm, the Jets’ defense continues to improve. They are ranked 10th in defense, 11th against the run and 13th against the pass. They were responsive in the red zone, however, ranking only 25th in red zone defensive efficiency.
Key injuries: Hall (knee) is out for the season and WR Corey Davis (knee) did not practice Thursday.

Evaluation:
The Patriots don’t look like the Patriots teams of the past under Belichick. They struggle in areas where they used to shine: too many penalties, bad special teams and turnovers. The Jets, meanwhile, have done all the little things right this year as they continue to make their roster a playoff contender. Hall’s loss stings although RB Michael Carter is a solid replacement and Robinson is sure to get some touches from the backfield as well. New England, a week after shutting down the Browns’ ground game completely, was swindled by the Bears. Mac Jones looks to be coming back as a starting quarterback, but he hasn’t looked sharp this season, holding onto the ball too long and committing far too many turnovers. The Jets will keep this game close and, in a complete turnaround, be the most effective late-game team to get this one out. New England’s inability to protect football will again be its downfall.
Take the points (+2.5) and the Jets.

That number has dropped over the week and for good reason. The Jets’ offense became much less dynamic without Hall in the lineup. New England struggles mightily in the red zone and settles for far too many field goals to hit big numbers. The quick Monday-to-Sunday turnaround is real and New England is 6-1 under in its last 7 games in this situation. For their part, the Jets are 6-1 under in their last seven games after a win over the ATS. Both teams will look to eliminate this one and wait for the other to make a mistake. A perfect recipe for a low score affair.
Take the least, 40.5 points.
Prediction: Under 40.5
