“Many visitors have reported hearing a barking dog in the Powerhouse (Stave Lake), believed to be the ghost of a pup that belonged to two men who died when their boat capsized while cruising Stave Lake,” said declared Hydro. “The tour guides at the power plant also reported hearing their name called when no one else was in the building, as well as slamming of doors and the sound of footsteps.”
The powerhouse, where the Stave Lake Falls provided the ideal site for a hydroelectric project, was once the largest source of hydroelectric power in British Columbia and is now a National Historic Site of Canada. It was completed in 1912.

The Ruskin Dam was completed in 1930 at the bottom of Stave Lake (creating the Hayward Lake Reservoir) and was used by X-Files producers filmed in British Columbia as an alien abduction site. Witnesses – according to BC Hydro – report seeing “strange lights in the sky near the Stave Lake Dam”.
The Buntzen Powerhouse complex, located on the eastern shore of Indian Arm, is perhaps the spookiest of all sites.
The first of two generating stations was built in 1905 to supply electricity to Vancouver’s streetcar system. Until then, the region’s electricity came from steam (burning wood or coal), so it was the first of its kind and the genesis of BC Hydro.
According to Hydro, the architect may have been Francis Rattenbury – who designed the British Columbia Parliament Buildings and the Empress Hotel in Victoria, then fell into disrepair and was killed by his young girl’s lover friend in England. A chilling story, but one that represents no more than the dozens of lives lost building the 13,000 foot tunnel through the granite from Lake Coquitlam to Lake Buntzen to supply water to power plants.

According to the energy supplier’s survey of 1,000 customers, 2% of respondents said they had seen their electrical appliances shake or move, 11% had seen their lights or appliances turn on and off randomly, while 14% reported unexplainable occurrences with electricity. Without providing a reason why these questions were included in the survey – one percent of people believed in vampires, two percent in Ogopogo, three percent in demons and four percent of British Columbians believed in Bigfoot.
BC Hydro also pointed out that a former BC Electric worker was Henry Pratt – aka Boris Karloff, who went on to make dozens of films, including the lead role in the 1931 version of Frankenstein.
