NICKELBACKthe long-awaited tenth studio album from and first release in five years, “Get Rollin'”will arrive on November 18 via GMB.
NICKELBACK released two singles so far “Get Rollin'”: “San Quentin” and “These days”. The official clip of “San Quentin” was filmed on August 30 at the Simon Fraser University Convocation Mall in British Columbia. According to CTV News, hundreds of NICKELBACK fans attended the filming, including a fan who traveled from Edmonton.
“San Quentin” was inspired by the leader Chad Kroeger met a real-life guard from California’s infamous high-security prison. The song follows the story as he plots his clever escape.
On why it took so long to produce the 2017 follow-up “Feed the Machine”, Chad say it WRAT radio station: “Well, we should have made a record a lot earlier, with all that free time [due to the coronavirus pandemic]. But it’s weird to say that, but for 25 years it’s felt like somebody’s been standing behind us with a cattle prod and saying, ‘Hey, the record needs to be done by this time. We’re going on a tour then. We will do Australia and then we will go to Europe and then we will come back. We will cross Canada. We will hit America. Like all the other bands that have to do this kind of stuff, you want to have the chance to see your fans all over the world. But with that, we were, like, ‘We’ll get there when we get there.’ [Laughs] And yes, we took our time with it, which was just a wonderful luxury, to be able to sit down and [go], ‘Nope. I’m going to play that guitar solo 40 more times for another three days and make sure it’s exactly how we want it, as opposed to deadline, deadline, deadline.”
As to whether “San Quentin” is representative of the musical direction of the rest of the album, Chad said, “All of our records are all over the map. We don’t have a single record that really sounds the same in terms of songwriting from top to bottom. I mean, they’re all over the map , and I don’t know how we did that and how we got acceptance from our fans to be able to do that, but we’re very lucky because we don’t have to record the same kind of music thinking to ourselves: “Well, the fans expect that, so we just have to give them a whole album of it. We can kind of do whatever we want. It’s so all over the map, and it’s gratifying as an artist to be able to come in, and as a songwriter, for us to be able to come together and say, ‘Let’s do something totally left field. Let’s try something heavier than we’ve ever done. Let’s try something lighter than we’ve ever done. No matter how we feel that day, we do it.”
Chad also talked about the lyrical inspiration for “San Quentin”saying, “I met the [San Quentin prison] guard at a party. And I couldn’t believe how young he was. I was, like, ‘There’s just no way you’re the manager of San Quentin,’ and everyone was, like, ‘Yup. He is.’ Guy Fieriit is [American restaurateur, author and Emmy Award-winning television presenter] a buddy of mine, and I was at his birthday party a few years ago. And all the time we were talking, I’m like, [laughs] I’m talking to this guy, but in my head all I could think about was, ‘I’m gonna write a song called “San Quentin”. That’s it.’ And I pasted it in my notes on my phone. And then after the riff was done, I think I yelled this line, ‘Can someone please keep me out of San Quentin?’ And we just took it from there.”
“Get Rollin'” and “Get Rollin’ (Deluxe)” will be available through digital platforms and physical CD format. The Deluxe Edition includes four bonus tracks – acoustic versions of “Time to”, “Just One More”, “Does Heaven Even Know You’re Missing?” and “Horizon”. Standard and exclusive versions of the album will also be released on vinyl in 2023.
