Given the longevity of the original Resident Evil 4 and with most of its footage seared into the minds of many fans, seeing changes and surprises for the upcoming new remake was something many will be thrilled about. Prior to its reveal, some were skeptical about how Capcom would change or maintain certain aspects critical to the game’s success.
With the release of the remake looming on the horizon and based on what has been exposed, fans can only assume that there are many more surprises left in this title to uncover, due to the multiple stages and locations. at hand. The biggest revelations at Capcom resident Evil showcase allayed many fans’ concerns and helped to further heighten excitement for the long-awaited remake.
5/5 Battle Changes
To say it’s a surprise is an understatement. It was a complete shock to many fans and those familiar with the original Resident Evil 4. Not only can Leon now parry enemy attacks with the knife which now contains a durability meter, but players can also block and parry incoming attacks from the chainsaw man known as Dr. Salvador.
While some will assume this is more of a negative in the aspect of the remake’s attempt to provide more of a horror feel versus the action, it’s a necessity. Capcom’s change to the controls with Leon now having the ability to move and aim, suggests enemies will be even more intense and dangerous, so parry attacks will compensate for this.
4/5 enemy designs
Those who remember the credits of Resident Evil 4 (which gave players a concept of Sadler’s dominance over rural Spain) will have immediately recognized the change from the first Ganado. As the credits roll, one of the images on display is of a Ganado as his head is tilted to the side, Las Plagas’ tentacles appearing to take control.
Many would have expected the Ganados to be continued in their design and in the wake of the virus takeover. However, it looks like Capcom is looking to surprise fans by adding new and unused designs to the remake.
3/5 The death of the dog
When talking about a change in tone and atmosphere, this was one of the biggest surprises for many in the showcase. Saving the dog from the bear trap is one of the main things that follows after the player’s first encounter with a Ganado. This will allow the rescued dog to help Leon in his battle with El Gigante later.
This time around, however, the dog is dead, which is a massive statement in Capcom’s shift toward a darker story than most know. it helps get the message across that Leon is completely alone and in the depths of isolation.
2/5 Stealth gameplay
What may prove controversial throughout the remake is the apparent addition of stealth gameplay. This was clear when Leon navigated the first cabin, where the player crouched while a Ganado searched around. From those who got access to early previews of the game, it looks like the opportunities for stealth kills are high.
It’s unclear if this will be active throughout the game and its multiple locations, but its presence is almost certainly felt here. This could potentially be detrimental to the more famous sections such as the Village Ambush if it turns out that every enemy can be taken out quietly. Knowing that this may be an active feature, most players will more than likely opt for the usual gung-ho and action type combat.
1/5 Ashley under control
Near the end of the original after learning that Ashley and Leon were infected with the Las Plagas virus, Sadler is finally able to take full control of Ashley’s body. Despite this, Leon was still able to carry out his mission. With the facilities already in place in the area, they were both able to extract the virus from their bodies, at the risk of dying. Not only does this introduce the question of how this will play out in the remake, but it also has the potential to change how sections of gameplay play out with this character. If she were to be repeatedly kidnapped only to be rescued by Leon again, it would be a little less believable due to the gritty, realistic tone Capcom is aiming for.
This time around, it seems like the focus is more on the virus taking over Ashley’s body, potentially playing a pivotal role in how the story will end. This could result in one of the most shocking twists and endings in case Ashley doesn’t and the ending here isn’t as happy as the original. Given the darker theme and tone, it’s not out of the question for Capcom to throw a spanner in the works and make the task at hand much harder. It also depends on how much the writers decide to stay true to the original and what they are willing to change and adjust.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is scheduled for March 24, 2023.
