Superhero movie end credits scenes are usually a movie’s best kept secret. No one dares to discuss or spoil the big cameo or plot twist that happens after the movie, setting the stage for what’s to come. In the case of black adam yetthat was not quite the case.
Rumors of a certain character appearing in the film started months ago. And like the the release of the film is getting closer and closer, the probability grew stronger and stronger. So, black adam himself, Dwayne Johnson, started talking about it in terms that didn’t totally spoil it, but didn’t hide it either. So the discussion doesn’t just become what the end credits scene is, it’s what the scene means for the future and how it happened. We’ve got it all covered and more.
During the credits of black adam, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) tells the anti-hero that he can stay on Earth but he has to stay in the town of Kahndaq. Adam disagrees and says there is no one on the planet who can stop him. Waller says she can talk to someone off-planet—wsnagh is when a very familiar red and blue suit falls from the sky. It’s Superman, played by Henry Cavill, and he tells Black Adam that they need to talk.
But, as we said, we knew it was coming. Johnson has been talking pretty openly about Superman for a while now. He’s even confirmed in interviews that he’d like to fight the character in an upcoming movie. And perhaps it will happen. That’s not the most interesting part of it all, yet.

What is more interesting is How? ‘Or’ What it happened. According the hollywood journalistneither Superman nor Cavill were in the plans for black adam when the film began production. It was not until much later that the idea was launched and then abandoned by Walter Hamada, then director of DC Films. Hamada “strove to move DC past the days when one filmmaker, in this case Zack Snyder, had outsized influence and could command an entire slate for years,” according to the trade. But Johnson didn’t take “No” for an answer. He went over Hamada’s head, got the cameo approved and, after what is described as “furious” negotiations, closed the deal over the past few months. (It should also be noted that Cavill and Johnson are both represented by the same manager, Dany Garcia. Additionally, Hamada recently left DC Films.)
These negotiations are apparently not limited to this cameo. As announced earlier this week, producers are looking for screenwriters for a new Cavill Superman movie. Will it feature Black Adam? Be independent ? We do not know.
We also don’t know if Cavill’s Superman will always have ties to Zack Snyder’s universe. A hint that it might not be the case comes in the black adam scene itself. When Superman appears, there’s a very subtle musical nod to John Williams’ theme from the 1978 original. Superman film. This is not the theme written by Hans Zimmer for 2013 Steel man. io9 spoke to black adam composer Lorne Balfe on choosing, and while he didn’t explain exactly how the choice was made, he made it clear that the choice was extremely deliberate.
“We thought a lot about why this theme was chosen. It wasn’t just a random thought,” the composer told io9. “There is something to do with this… Everyone who had to do with [that scene] spent a long time debating which theme should go… there are reasons for what can happen.
Do these reasons mean keep this new batch of DC movies away from the Snyderverse? Again, we don’t know. But what we do know is that Black Adam is bringing Henry Cavill back as Superman, that wasn’t an easy thing to pull off, and Warner Bros.—as well as Dwayne Johnson—plan to take full advantage of it.
black adam is now in theaters.
