CALGARY — Tyler Toffoli scored 4:30 into overtime Saturday night as the Calgary Flames overcame a two-goal first-period deficit to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2.
Nazem Kadri and Brett Ritchie also scored for Calgary (4-1-0).
Sebastian Aho and Calvin de Haan secured the attack for Carolina (3-1-1).
Jacob Markstrom had 25 saves to improve to 3-0-0. Antti Raanta made 29 saves to take the loss to drop to 1-0-1.
To cap off a thrilling overtime, Rasmus Andersson carried the puck up the sideboards and deep into the Hurricanes’ end before passing into the slot that Toffoli caught once inside the post for his third of the season. .
In a battle between two teams with identical records, who both got there the same way — three straight wins to start the season, then a loss in their previous outing — Carolina controlled the game for much of the season. third period, outscoring Calgary 12-8, but could not break a 2-2 tie. Included was a four-minute power play with less than seven minutes left when Blake Coleman put his stick in Brent Burns’ mouth.
But Calgary effectively broadcast the 5-for-4 by holding the Hurricanes to two shots while generating two of their own.
A key moment of the game came at 13:07 of the first period when Carolina center Jordan Staal was taken on a penalty for tripping over Kadri as the Hurricanes were once again buzzing in the offensive zone. Shots were 8-2 in favor of the then visitors, who also held a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
On the next faceoff, Kadri won it to give the Flames possession and they never gave up the puck with the power play needing just 24 seconds to cut the lead in half with Kadri marking his second of the season.
From then on, Calgary looked rejuvenated and that continued throughout the second period as the Flames edged Carolina 15-3 in a tie shot.
Ritchie’s tying goal came at 2:31 when he got the puck alone in the corner, turned around and fired a shot at the net from a sharp angle that Raanta missed.
The Flames dominated most of the second with the only error coming in the final seconds when a lack of defensive coverage allowed Burns to wander from the blue line and snap what appeared to be the go-ahead goal. . But Calgary challenged it for offside and after reviewing the video the goal was disallowed leaving the score tied after 40 minutes.
Calgary fell 1-0 after 1:44 of play when Aho scored on the Hurricanes’ first shot. After a turnover from Andrew Mangiapane, Aho beat Noah Hanifin and slid a shot through the five holes on Markstrom.
It was an auspicious start for Markstrom, who struggled to start the season after being a Vezina Trophy finalist last season. In the last game, he was taken out after the first period.
The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead at 10:28 with a point shot from de Haan. It was another frustrating moment for Markstrom, who didn’t have his stick after losing it earlier in the stretch.
STRIATED KADRI
With his goal, Kadri has six points and becomes only the fourth player in franchise history to start his career with the Flames with a five-game point streak. The others were Phil Housley (7 g, 94-95), Sergei Makarov (7 hm, 1989-90), Sean Monahan (5 games, 2013-14).
CALMING THE STORM
After scoring in each of Carolina’s first four games, the scoring streaks of Carolina forwards Andrei Svechnikov (6-2-8) and Martin Necas (3-4-7) were both snapped. Svechnikov, who was only ahead of Steven Stamkos in goals early in the night, was held without a shot.
