The highly anticipated remake of the Capcom classic Resident Evil 4 is getting closer, and the recent fan preview of a plethora of gameplay and story footage in the Resident Evil Showcase left many others even more enthusiastic. Considering Capcom’s plans to create an experience that was new while staying true to the nature of the original was clear, with many famous moments present in the reveal.
Despite this, there are a substantial number of clear differences from what was shown that was only in the Village section, and based on this, this is very likely to be prevalent throughout the journey in Resident Evil 4.
5/5 Opening Sequence
Those who know Resident Evil 4Capcom’s intense opening sequence will have noted the huge differences Capcom implemented in this remake. Based on this reveal, it looks like the first house Leon encounters will be much larger, containing more rooms and enemies to face than before. The player will also come across one of two police officers who will travel with Leon to his destination in search of Ashley Graham.
Right off the bat, the environment seems to be much more unsettling, quiet, dark, and isolating as Leon wanders around the village, still wondering what’s really going on. While the original certainly had moments of dread, including the opening sequence, this time around it’s going to be a lot more serious.
4/5 enemy aggression
The original title was very famous for its sense of isolation and lack of support for the majority of its runtime. Enemies were relentless in their pursuit and attacks, often leaving players intimidated by the overwhelming numbers at hand. With the showcase revealing just how much more aggressive Ganados will be in this remake, fans will know their experience is about to be elevated to a whole new level.
Given the change in controls and Leon’s ability to aim and move simultaneously, Capcom has clearly improved the aggressive nature of enemies and increased the speed with which they can rush at the player. This will help strike a balance in terms of maintaining the edge-of-the-seat feel of the original, while capturing a new, more tense experience when trying to fend off enemies.
3/5 Quick Equipment for Weapons
One of the biggest complaints about the original was the need to pause the game to access and equip different weapons, but that was obviously due to development capabilities at the time. Now, with the remake on the horizon using the RE engine, the ability for players to switch weapons on the fly and engage in combat without losing momentum.
Apart from the advanced controls compared to what many called “tank controls” in the original, this will be extremely beneficial for players who were looking for a smooth and fluid experience and avoids any complications that Resident Evil 6 contained the ability for disabled players to pause the game.
2/5 enemy attacks
This is one of the biggest changes on a larger scale along with all the other differences. It’s a change that opts more for the idea of adding new, unpredictable scenarios. A large majority of the attacks present in the original were more aligned with Leon’s usual grab and choke, ax throw, or weapon attack.
This time around, it looks like the Ganados, and potentially other enemies later in the game, will hit the player, jump on the player with more distance, and even hold Leon more deliberately for Dr. Salvador to come and finish the job. . An innovation as such will keep players new and familiar on their toes when engaging in combat with enemies, as some may expect the usual attack patterns of the original, but then they will be surprised. when enemies will use different tactics to take down Leon.
1/5 Horror focused tone
Since Capcom made it their goal to ensure that this remake is not identical to the original but rather a reimagined and improved version in multiple aspects, the change in tone was to be expected. From the first encounter with the first villager and the ambush in the village, many fans will know that Resident Evil 4 Remake will join the resident Evil franchise’s original horror roots and take a serious, grounded approach. The gameplay showcase and story trailer hint at the gruesome concept of Leon being left alone on his mission to find and save the President’s daughter.
Despite the usual jokes and Leon one-liners still present in the game, Capcom has done a really good job of illustrating the idea that it won’t be fun and games like the original, which at times felt unserious and less realistic in certain aspects. This will be closer to the canceled version of Resident Evil 4 where the storyline was supernatural, darker and had the classic fixed resident Evil camera angle. Fortunately, players will now get as close to this unreleased version as possible, with this remake giving a different taste to a cult classic.
