Gotham Knights
Gotham Knights managed to be one of the few fall releases that didn’t get pushed back to 2023 this year, but from the looks of the ongoing review notes, it might have needed a little longer. .
With a few dozen reviews from major outlets, Gotham Knights currently has a 70/100 on Metacritic. While this might seem “average” based on numbers alone, with the way the game’s rating works, it’s actually not great, and the aggregated score includes overwhelmingly negative reviews from major points. of sale.
That 70 puts Gotham Knights as the 95th highest-rated PS5 release of the year, which of course isn’t very high. From what I can tell, this puts Gotham Knights in a tier of lackluster sports releases (NHL 23, Madden 23) and the biggest game to review further down is Saints Row with its crushing 61 score. the whole year remains Babylon’s Fall from Platinum Games with an almost unheard of number of 41.
Gotham Knights
But what really caught my attention were some extremely low scores from some of the biggest gaming press outlets, including the the biggest selling point, IGN, which gave the game a 5/10. Here’s critic Travis Northup’s “verdict”:
“Gotham Knights is a consistently disappointing return to Batman’s troubled city and a distinct step back from the past decade-plus of Batman games. Although running around Gotham in two-player co-op can be decent fun and each of the four playable crime fighters is well executed in its dialogue and distinctive moves, too many fundamentals are insufficient for me to recommend it Inconsistent frame rates, weak story, one-note combat that feels rarely well, there was almost always something wrong to ensure that I didn’t experience the triumphant return with my friends by my side that I had envisioned.
IGN is no outlier, here’s GameSpot with its 4/10 review:
“Gotham Knights acts more as a cautionary tale than a logical next step for this legendary universe. For a long time no one knew how to make an engaging Batman game, and then we had four in seven years. Taking what worked before while seeking to evolve it is admirable, but the obsession with loot is ill-conceived, cynical and vapid. It’s as if sheer volume takes precedence over meaningful content, and for those who might appreciate the grind, the lack of endgame will be noticeable.
Gotham Knights
It’s not all bad, here’s a positive 9/10 review from Twinfinite, who thinks it can’t and shouldn’t be compared to the Arkham series.
“Gotham Knights is a game that draws its line in the sand early on and rarely hesitates. It’s a game that emphasizes the importance of support and empathy while sprinkling in all the elements we’ve come to expect and love from these titles along the way. So no, Gotham Knights is not an Arkham game. He neither needed nor wanted to be. And because of that, it thrives.
Either way, a 70 Metascore is not something any publisher or developer wants to see. I will say that something seemed a bit “off” with Gotham Knights early on, and word about the game running at 30fps max on next-gen consoles has a few people on edge ahead of release here. But the main problem seems to be poor combat and repetitive items, which are frequently brought up.
We’ll see if players agree with the reviewers’ rating when the game releases tomorrow, and how that might affect the game’s overall sales going forward. Stay tuned.
