The night of October 20-21 will feature the peak of the Orionid meteor shower, one of the best celestial events the fall season has to offer.
One of nature’s most anticipated light shows is set to peak this week as space junk and dust trails from Halley’s famous Comet scatter across the night sky.
The Orionids meteor shower is expected to peak at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, October 21, but will be best seen earlier in this time zone, between midnight and dawn. If viewing properly, away from bright lights and light-polluted areas, viewers can expect to see around 10 to 20 meteors per hour during this time, according to EarthSky.
As the meteor shower peaks, the moon will approach a thin waning crescent and will no longer be bright enough to obscure the view of the meteors. However, Bill Cooke, head of NASA’s Office of Meteoroid Environment, suggests looking anywhere in the night sky, away from the moon, for better viewing of fireballs.

NASA recommends going out at least 30 minutes before observing meteors, to adjust to the night sky.
“Watching meteor showers is something that takes time. You should plan to spend about two hours outside – it’s not a 15-minute adventure,” Cooke added.
The meteor shower officially started on September 26 and will last until around November 22, so skywatchers will still have a chance to see the Orionids after the peak.
The Orionids radiate outward from the constellation of Orion the Hunter – specifically a point near Orion’s sword, near the big red star, Betelgeuse – but you don’t need to know the location from this point to see the meteors. They will appear in all parts of the sky.
No special equipment is needed to observe meteor showers, and the Orionids are visible from all parts of the world, weather permitting.
