Warning: Contains MAJOR spoilers for Black Adam!
After presenting a full team for the Justice Society of America, black adam sees the death of Doctor Fate. Played by Pierce Brosnan, Doctor Fate is an old friend of Aldis Hodge’s (AKA Carter Hall) Hawkman. He serves as a calmer presence throughout the film, providing the JSA with a more cautious perspective as Hawkman continually attempts to defeat Black Adam in physical combat.
In the comics, Doctor Fate is a founding member of the Justice Society, and black adam places Kent Nelson as a retired member of the team who returns to help with one last job. Based on historical movie tropes revolving around retired heroes and their final mission, it’s perhaps no surprise that Doctor Fate dies in black adam. However, the build-up to Doctor Fate’s death at the hands of Sabbac is still shocking, and there are a lot of questions surrounding Doctor Fate. black adam death, his decision to fight Sabbac alone, and whether Kent Nelson or Doctor Fate have a DCEU future.
Why Doctor Fate Was Happy To Die
After having a vision that shows Hawkman dying in the final black adam fight, Doctor Fate prevents the rest of the Justice Society from entering the ruins of Kandaq Palace to fight Sabbac himself. By doing so, it seems that he is able to prevent his vision from coming true. However, this requires the death of Kent Nelson, a fact that Doctor Fate seems to be fully aware of when he goes to fight Sabbac.
The sacrifice of Doctor Fate in black adam makes sense as a way for him to save Hawkman as the two have clearly been close friends for a long time. However, that doesn’t necessarily explain the explicit happiness that Kent Nelson seems to feel about her death. However, Doctor Fate black adam death is set up with his reluctance to use his powers. While his helmet grants him great powers, the helmet also possesses him to some degree, taking away some of his control. Thanks to these powers, he has been able to see what the future holds for him for many years, and it is noted that he has been around for at least 100 years. Doctor Fate’s happiness about his death comes from the freedom he grants him from the helmet and a determined fate as he ultimately sees nothing ahead of him to worry about.
Doctor Fate’s Visions Explained (And Why He Could Change Them)
Visions of the future of Doctor Fate play out throughout black adam as seemingly immutable results of history. These would seem to fit the Doctor Fate name as must-haves. In turn, the idea that this vision of the future cannot be changed matches the stories of countless movies and TV shows that have explored the outcomes of the vision of the future.
However, while black adam only shows one future that Doctor Fate sees is kind of a cheap DC movie move, as Kent Nelson reveals he actually saw multiple possibilities. It looks a lot more like the future seen in the culmination of the MCU’s Infinity Saga by Doctor Strange (a character who was influential in later versions of the comic book depiction of Doctor Fate, a influence that is clear by looking black adam). As Doctor Fate saw a future where Hawkman died, black adam never showed the vision Fate had where Kent Nelson died instead. He could see the paths to the various fates, but knew, as did Doctor Strange, that revealing how those paths worked too soon would prevent their success from being possible, regardless of who died in the process.
Interestingly, one wonders if Doctor Fate really stopped his vision. He seemed unable to see his own death, but when Hawkman used the helmet to trick Sabbac, Hawkman’s vision of death is identical to that shown in Kent Nelson. black adam vision. It seems for a moment like it’s a statement that this future can’t be changed, but it’s possible that since the vision originated from Doctor Fate’s helmet, the helmet itself was recreating the exact vision. as part of the deception against Sabbac.
Why Doctor Fate’s Helmet Disappeared After The Fight (Not During)
After the death of Doctor Fate black adam, his helmet falls to the ground and is eventually picked up by Hawkman who uses his powers to help the Justice Society and Black Adam himself defeat Sabbac. It is only after the battle is over that Doctor Fate’s helmet dissolves from Hawkman’s clutches with the particles floating in the sky. Earlier in black adamwhen Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) of the Justice Society discuss Fate’s helmet, it is mentioned that he chooses who can touch it and use its powers, so Doctor Fate’s helmet serves as a representation of how his own agency on who can touch him as he leaves Hawkman and presumably seeks a new host.
As Doctor Fate’s helmet disappeared into black adam Logically, it might seem odd that Fate’s helmet didn’t disappear as soon as he was killed and let Hawkman touch it. Doctor Fate’s helmet is able to possess the wearer because (at least in the comics) he is not only sentient, but is inhabited by the god Nabu. Having been linked to Kent Nelson for so many years, the helmet and Nabu probably came to feel some kind of emotional feeling towards the mortal. After Kent’s death in the DCEUs black adam, the helmet remained and allowed Hawkman to use its power so he could exact revenge on Sabbac for killing Kent. However, once this vengeance was concluded, the helmet moved on.
Will Doctor Fate return to the DCEU?
Whenever a major comic book character dies, it’s not uncommon for them not to stay that way. But after Doctor Fate black adam dead, is it possible that he will return to the DCEU? The short answer is yes, but there is more complexity than that. In the comics, Doctor Fate is defined by the helmet, not the person, and while Kent Nelson is the first Doctor Fate in every iteration of DC’s timeline, he’s not the only one. With the helmet leaving at the end of black adamit seems likely that the helmet could move to a new host and that a version of Doctor Fate could reappear in the DCEU, despite his death in black adam.
However, perhaps the biggest question regarding the black adam death is whether or not Pierce Brosnan’s Kent Nelson can return to the DCEU. Technically, it’s not Doctor Fate who is actually dead, but Kent himself, and while the helmet may take on a new host (in more recent comics, Kent’s mantle is taken over by his apprentice and little -nephew Khalid Nassour) Kent returning to the DCEU in full form seems unlikely. There is an open door for Pierce Brosnan to resume his black adam role in the DCEU however as in the animated series young justice, after Kent Nelson’s death, he is able to contain his spirit within the helmet for some time. This could allow Kent and Pierce Brosnan to appear to future users of the helmet, if not in full bodily form, and could also provide further reasoning as to why Hawkman was able to use Doctor Fate’s helmet after Kent Nelson’s death in black adam.
