I played the recently released digital trading card game marvel snap longer than most. Ever since the beta started earlier this year, I’ve been addicted to superhero gaming like nothing else. Every time I open it, I remember why I called it perfect for beginners and a great booster for the trading card genre. But like all relationships, there were a few rocks along the way that challenged my love for her — ones that carried through to her full exit.
One of those rocks was the game’s progression system, which separates it from other Trading Card Game entries. Unlike those where you gamble your money hoping to draw a good card from a surprise pack, marvel snap instead, you play time with card unlocks through battle passes. My problems with marvel snap started once i understood the game at what i would call a low intermediate level. I was winning a good chunk of my matches (the bots flooding the beta servers helped with that), but I never found myself on a type of streak that helped me level up faster. In fact, at one point, I just felt like I was stuck in a grinding rut.
Where the problem arises is that, unlike other physical trading card games, you don’t get cards by buying packs and hoping to get a card you need to complete a specific game. . In marvel snap, you are forced to win matches, complete the battle pass, and spend money to get boosters and points, which are used to upgrade cards. As you level these cards, your card level increases, allowing you to unlock more boosters, cards, and points to be paid to level up said cards.
My frustration with this system came sooner than I thought. By the time I hit a 200 card level, I realized I was barely getting any new cards. This usually wouldn’t be a problem, but in a player versus player game, the variety of your deck and cards can lead to win-lose situations. Some may get bored of the decks they’re stuck with and want to play something new with another useful or meta-defining card, but they won’t be able to access it because they’re still stuck with a first deck.
This problem has been present since the early days of the beta. I remember watching content creators play the game and reading comments from players who were frustrated that they didn’t have cool decks like streamed because they were too underleveled to use them and couldn’t to progress. These issues resonated with me at the time – so much so that I gave up on the game altogether for a while.
However, sometimes a rainbow may appear after a storm. That’s exactly what happened for me once I started thinking about how the muddy progression system shines a light on what marvel snap ends well.
The card level system forces players to really learn the game. Although I get annoyed when I’m stuck with the same basic levels looking at cards I’m tired of, subconsciously I’m learning the game at a level of base and deeper simultaneously. Not only am I learning the basics, but I’m being forced to really learn what the different cards do. It’s one of the most important steps to getting good at card games, and it’s kind of a necessary evil that helps players in the end.
Whereas marvel snapThe road to collecting cards can be tedious, I can see what developer Second Dinner was thinking, in addition to tricking players into spending money to level up faster. The problem only arises when combining this idea with casual gamers who may not have the time or patience to stick around. And given that it’s a free game, it’s not a small audience.
