Warning: Contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon Season 1, Episode 10, “The Black Queen”, and George RR Martin’s book, Fire & Blood.Daemon Targaryen sings High Valyrian to the dragon Vermithor in Dragon HouseThe Season 1 finale, with big implications for the future. Now that the Dance of the Dragons starts correctly, Daemon recognizes that black has a big advantage over green: more dragons. Daemon counts that they have 13 (now 12, sadly) compared to the green’s four, and is already working to ensure the weapons at their disposal won’t go to waste.
Based on its mention and appearance, matching the nickname “the bronze fury”, the dragon demon goes to see and sings Vermithor, who will play a big role in the dance. Vermithor’s only rider was King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, but he’s over 100 years old at this point in time. Dragon Houseand among the greatest dragons in Westeros. Vermithor is one of the few dragons to come close to Vhagar in size and power, and as the Season 1 finale shows, that kind of raw power can completely turn the tide of any situation, which Daemon hope Vermithor will do for black.
Why Daemon sings to Vermithor and what does it mean
Daemon chanting to a dragon has a few possible patterns and meanings, all of which take into account Dragon Housethe future. In terms of pure character, it helps further establish Daemon’s more volatile nature: from his bond with Caraxes to being the one who gets Syrax’s dragon eggs, and now singing for Vermithor, Daemon is essentially shown as one with the dragons. , more parent-minded with them than anyone else. The idea of a Targaryen person being a “dragon” has been used before (with game of thrones‘ Viserys and Daenerys, to varying degrees), but never to this extent. The exact translation of the High Valyrian dragon song from Daemon is unclear, but it likely serves a dual purpose.
One is for Vermithor to become more socialized again, having not had a rider since King Jaehaerys I Targaryen (who has been dead for about 30 years). Likewise, Daemon probably promises Vermithor that he’ll get a new pilot soon, setting up events to come later in Dragon House. At least one of the words looks like “New” high valyrian (“Arlie”), but also, given Daemon’s belief that the dragons are winning them over in the impending war, it would make sense that he would seek out riders to Dragon Houseis other dragons. As for where Daemon got the knowledge of the song, it’s plausible that it was something he heard his grandfather, Jaehaerys, was doing with Vermithor. Otherwise, he spent a plot time reading at Pentos, and could have acquired the knowledge there.
Who rides Vermithor in the dance of the dragons
Vermithor will be ridden by a blacksmith bastard named Hugh, who later goes by the name Hugh Hammer (for wielding a warhammer). As it stands, while black has multiple dragons, he doesn’t have as many dragon riders. This will change when, during the dance, Jacaerys Velaryon calls out for “dragon seeds”, people who have traces of Targaryen blood and who might be able to ride a dragon. It’s a venture that leads to several brutal and fiery deaths, as many try and fail, but Hugh is among those who successfully bond with a dragon, becoming Vermithor’s second horseman.
Hugh and Vermithor will play key roles in some of the Dragon Dance’s greatest battles. They will fight and help win the Battle of the Gullet, a bloody sea battle that sees black defeating the triarchy (who are allied with green). Later, however, in the First Battle of Tumbleton, Hugh would betray the Blacks, with him and another Dragonseed – a man named Ulf, who rides the dragon Silverwing – defecting to the Greens, helping them win the battle. .
Dragon House will return for season 2 on HBO (release date to be confirmed).
