B
Forced his offense. He continued to miss most of his shots, especially his pull-ups and short-midrange turnovers. His appearance wasn’t terrible, but his rhythm didn’t seem natural. But his catch-and-shoot triples and his defense were such that he was still a pretty big advantage. He couldn’t plug Toronto’s holes on the defensive side on his own, but he at least tried. Made a few mistakes, sure, but overall he was Toronto’s only committed defenseman until the Koloko brawl ended.

A
Attacked the offensive glass. Sealed deep in paint. Really aggressive in position. He takes up space until people stop him, and that’s such a plus for Toronto. More dabs of paint, more coats, more open triples: it does so much. Barnes is a visionary passer, but he’s at his best when he uses his passing as a blocker, trying to create advantages as a scorer first – that’s where he was against Miami. Then he twisted his ankle midway through the second quarter and walked off the field. Was huge before this point.

B+
His attacking process was confident early on, creating advantages, getting past initial defenders and slipping the ball to teammates. He took very similar shots to the earlier games, but they didn’t fall to the same extent in this one. He struggled to keep his doppelganger, Jimmy Butler. A quiet game for him, and then it was almost a triple double? The man is crazy.

B-
Nice defensive awareness at the start of the match, helping Fred VanVleet very early on the post against Bam Adebayo and contributing to the turnover. A flight on the open field while also playing in the passing lanes. When he catches and shoots purely, he is fully one of the best shooters in basketball. Forced to put the ball on the ground, it is good, but the efficiency drops immediately. He hit a few clutch buckets to pull Toronto under eight in the final period, but he had a few chances to close them and couldn’t take it. He also appeared to be injured late in the game.

VS
Bam Adebayo got up early in the post, which – I don’t know if I was surprised or not. His hands are basically the five-point palm explosive heart technique. Once again, he was content to primarily serve as a connective setter, cutter, and occasional pick-and-roll initiator. Unlike games 1 and 2, it didn’t work very well for much of the game. It recorded a lot of fouls and not a lot of buckets. Well spent, to say the least. He used Koloko’s unfair ejection as real motivation, immediately hitting a triple and stealing the ball. But it wasn’t enough.

A
Drilled a corner triple to hurt the Heat as soon as he went in the zone – when Siakam left the game. Significant blow for Achiuwa’s confidence and for Toronto’s offensive approach. Hit one on the other side shortly after. His pace and decision-making improved a lot, and he picked his spots to create himself rather than use every opportunity – was really effective on the dribble in late situations. Defensively, he was very strong in the second half. His movement is so fluid, and he’s so big and strong, it’s crazy. His best game of the young season, although Toronto recorded their worst. Surpassed Bam Adebayo, which is the most important, right?

A+
No more first minutes; more confidence of the nurse in the recruit. He placed solid screens, making good contact to open up space for VanVleet. Started in place of Barnes in the second half which is great for rookie development. Was he also… tackled by Caleb Martin? And ejected for it. I mean, is he a rookie? Difficult to find another explanation. It’s a shame because I was delighted to see him alongside the starters for extra minutes. The note is mainly for self-defense.

B-
Attacked the offensive glass from the start of the game. Good. A really calm and confident triple catch-and-shoot. That’s about as important as it gets to his development as a prospect. On the negative side, it didn’t even try to touch the paint, which is where the majority of its usefulness comes from. Needs to get that pre-season aggressiveness back.

B-
Played alongside Siakam, Barnes and Achiuwa and – wouldn’t you know it – he had an immediate impact. Good offensive rebound, finishing in transition and practical defense. Still, he has to earn his minutes, and Toronto has decidedly failed to do so.

A
Came in the game, hit a triple. Another in the fourth. Nice start to the season. He was used entirely as an off-ball cutter and spacer, which is really the only way to get run in meaningful games. Did well in that role too. Set a nice screen for Siakam in the 4-1 ghost the Raptors have been chasing so long. Not a lot of racing, but he must be very happy with his success with his minutes.

He asked Koloko to quarterback for a zone in the second quarter, and even though the Heat scored, they did on some pretty tough shots. I love Nurse throwing Koloko in the fire – different fires – and seeing how he performed. But at the end of the day, games are about winning, not scaling up for second-round rookies, and the Raptors weren’t ready for this one. Their minds weren’t particularly defensive. It has to fall on Nurse one way or another. The comeback failed after Koloko was ejected, as the hole was too deep.
