NEW YORK — Erik Karlsson scored 49 seconds into overtime and David Quinn won for the first time as San Jose Sharks coach, 3-2 against his former team, the New York Rangers, at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.
The Sharks (1-5-0) started the season with five straight regulation losses, including two at the 2022 NHL World Series in Prague.
Quinn coached Rangers for three seasons from 2018-21. He was hired to coach the Sharks on July 26.
“I can’t go to CVS and buy trust pills,” Quinn said. “You get it by playing the right way and doing the right thing and watching your teammates do the right thing. At some point you have to say enough is enough, and I thought that’s what they did after the second half. They’re just tired of losing, and I thought they understood what it would take for us to win.”
Karlsson from the bottom of the right face-off circle on a pass from Timo Meier, which was behind the goal line. Karlsson pushed the puck forward despite tripping and falling. He stood up and Meier found him wide open.
“I find myself in a situation where I think they’re going to call a penalty, and when I realize they don’t, that’s either what happened or they’re going to have a 2v0 in the other way,” Karlsson said. “I found my balance well and felt like I had control of the puck even though it might not look like it. Timo did a great job staying patient and found me for an easy goal.

Logan Couture and Radim Simek also scored for the Sharks, who went 5-5 shorthanded to move to 20-20 this season. James Remer made 21 saves.
Artemi Panarin and Philippe Chytil scored for Rangers (3-1-1). Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves, including 16 on as many shots in the third period.
Rangers had two shots in the third, none during a 13:50 streak.
“To be honest with you, I was pretty happy with the first two periods,” New York coach Gerard Gallant said. “We didn’t execute as well as usual on the power play and we got a little frustrated, but we still dominated the game pretty well. I think they had nine shots after two. So we were in good shape, we played well, but that third period, I have no idea where that came from. It was just a total meltdown. It was embarrassing, actually.

San Jose killed two penalties before Couture scored on the power play at 6:02 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead.
The Rangers’ power-play struggles continued later in the first; they were 0 for 4.
“Giving this team four power play in the first half and still surviving and going 1-0 was an incredible accomplishment,” Quinn said.
But Chytil tied New York 1-1 at 1:50 of the second by stealing the puck from Luc Kounin in the neutral zone and beating Reimer five-hole with a low wrist shot from the left face-off circle.
Panarin gave New York a 2-1 lead at 9:05. He connected on a round trip with Adam Fox with a short point high side from the bottom in the left circle.
Simek scored 4:05 later to equalize 2-2 at 13:10. He went down from the point through the right circle, got the pass from Matt Nietowent backhand and fired between Fox and past Shesterkin.
The Sharks took control of the game in the third period.
“Just a little too sloppy in transition, breaking pucks, passing wasn’t as clean as it should be, but it happens,” the Rangers defenseman said. Jacob Trouba said. “You’re not going to be every night, but you have to know how to play your game and adjust your game when you don’t have it. You have to simplify a bit. I don’t think we’ve done that. I think that we tried to force a little too much.
The Rangers won the first faceoff in overtime, but never got the puck out of their defensive zone. A turnover led to a Sharks scoring chance and a Shesterkin save. San Jose won Shesterkin’s left faceoff, never gave up the puck and scored.
“It felt like we played to win today and that’s how we’re going to have to try to play,” Karlsson said. “We’re not going to win every game, but we can’t be afraid to make mistakes or to sit on our care and pray that our keepers save us and that we get an easy shot somehow. another. I think it was a good step for us and it’s about doing it consistently.”
