“The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change,” Dwayne Johnson proclaimed at the start of the hype cycle for black adam. And between battles with the Justice Society of America and secrets being revealed about the DC hero’s own origins, he wasn’t entirely wrong. But as the movie’s post-credits scene reveals, the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe, backed by Superman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman and Wonder Woman, hasn’t totally changed yet – which is fine with Johnson. . He fought tooth and nail to make sure the modern DC Universe got its due before slamming it against a wall.
[Ed. note: This post contains ending and post-credits scene spoilers for Black Adam.]
In black adam, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller appears to Black Adam in Kahndaq’s old throne room via a drone-mounted hologram to tell him that she expects him to stay in Kahndaq if not. Kahndaq’s hero replies that there is no one on Earth who can stand up to him, so why would he listen to him? Waller retorts: She knows people who are not from Earth at all.
Cue the arrival of Superman, played by Henry Cavill himself, in the big blue suit for the first time since 2017 Justice League (unless you count new footage shot for 2021 Zack Snyder’s Justice League). In a friendly tone, he tells Black Adam that it’s been a while since anyone has made the world as nervous as him, and he sums up the whole scene simply and openly: “We should talk.”
While the scene should make fans giddy at the possibilities of Cavill returning to the role – and recent news suggests a man of steel 2 could finally be in the works – the re-emergence of the Big Blue Boy Scout was not a mandate for Johnson and his black adam creative team. He was a fan who got his wish.
“For a long time, it bothered me that millions of people were speaking up and wondering and asking questions, and no one was answering the questions,” Johnson said of Superman’s dormancy. “Even though you had answers that maybe people didn’t like, what always bothered me was… well, talk!” Someone takes the floor and talks to the fans, talks to the people, tells them what the plans are. And not only that […] but what bothered us was that you have a guy who is a great Superman and a beloved Superman, a guy who loves mythology and knows the character so deeply, like Henry does Superman, and then on top of that, the most important thing is the fans love him as Superman… He’s been on the sidelines for five years, and nobody talks about it!”
Johnson spent nearly 20 years trying to get the Black Adam movie made, but when the project’s current iteration took shape five years ago, its star was adamant the action was tied to the wider DC universe – even if Warner Bros. Pictures brass was beginning to turn away from the extended “Snyderverse” notion established by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder.
This led to some conflict. Not only did Johnson want to introduce Black Adam and the Justice Society of America in a chunky premiere, but he pushed to bring Cavill back as Superman. According to a recent report, that involved bypassing DC Films executive Walter Hamada, who rejected the idea, and campaigning directly with WB executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who warmed to it.
“Above all [the new introductions], we said, ‘Let’s go get the strongest, most unstoppable force in the whole universe that’s been on the sidelines for five years. Let’s go ahead and fight hard to reintroduce it to the DC Universe through black adam.’ And this fight? We had a fight. We fought long on our side at Seven Bucks; we weren’t going to take no for an answer.

Picture: Warner Bros.
And they didn’t: eventually, Warner Bros. allowed Cavill to appear in the film, and the scene was reportedly shot last September.
Does the post-credits scene foreshadow an actual shift in the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe? It may depend on the quality black adam did at the box office in its opening weekend, and what Warner Bros. in the coming months. Hamada will be leaving his job at DC soon, and rumors suggest that De Luca will play a bigger role in the development and expansion of the comic book universe. Cavill could be back in a man of steel 2, even as Ta-Nehisi Coates and JJ Abrams work on another imagined Superman project with a black actor in mind. There is also the flashthe multiversal burst of and the moving plans for a direct sequel. It’s above Aquaman 2due out in 2023, and ongoing development wonder woman 3. Also there is batman 2 and Joker: Madness for twothat prove the universe is big enough for duplicate heroes.
black adam ends with the return of Superman and the words “let’s talk”. And it’s all talk until someone asks Cavill to really get ready for the scenes that play before the credits roll.
