This year’s FIFA World Cup will see two firsts: an autumn World Cup and the first World Cup to be played in the Middle East.
The 22nd quadrennial tournament opens with host country Qatar taking on Ecuador in Group A at Al-Bayt Stadium.
Ecuador finished fourth in CONMEBOL qualifying, with a 7-5-6 record, with Cruz Azul striker Michael Estrada of Liga MX leading the way.
Qatar, which automatically qualified as the host nation, went 7-1-0 to lead Group E into the second round of the AFC qualifiers.
Key stories ahead of the FIFA World Cup
While the world will be watching when the talents of Frenchman Kylian Mbappe, Canadian Alphonso Davies, Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentinian Lionel Messi take to the pitch, some notable names will be absent from this year’s event.
The defending champions French side will be without N’Golo Kante for the tournament as the Chelsea midfielder suffered a setback while recovering from a hamstring injury last week.
The Portuguese team will be without Liverpool striker Diogo Jota who was ruled out of the World Cup due to a calf injury he suffered against Manchester City. Moreover, they will also be without Wolverhampton winger Pedro Neto who is due to undergo ankle surgery.
England defender Kyle Walker underwent groin surgery earlier in October and is doubtful for the tournament.
The status of other key players remains to be determined.
Bayern Munich’s German winger Leroy Sané tore his thigh muscle in his club’s win over Freiburg last weekend with no timetable for his return. Juventus winger Angel Di Maria is expected to return in early November and be set to join the Argentina side in Qatar as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
Brazil’s Richarlison suffered a calf injury last week in Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Everton in the Premier League. The striker should, however, compete in the World Cup.
